Morning in the Harbour
Morning in the Harbour, 1634
Oil on Canvas
Location: Hermitage, St. Petersburg
There is some discrepancy with the date of origin associated with this painting, with some art historians believing it was painted in 1649. Like most of Claude's paintings, several initial drafts and reproductions of this piece exist, including a piece of disputed origin that most historians believe was replicated by Claude before 1650. This second piece possesses slight differences from the original 1634 piece, including a less elaborate arch and an absence of boats in the foreground.
This painting, Morning in the Harbour, is the first of several seaport pictures with light emanating from a visible sun just above the horizon.

Coast View with Apollo and the Cumaean Sibyl, 1646

Location: Hermitage, St. Petersburg
This piece is also known as The Bay of Baia, due to this title appearing in an 1859 Hermitage inventory. However, the painting does not actually depict this bay located near Naples. Instead, it is a collage of sorts with buildings and relics from different areas incorporated in one painting. Included are the ruins of the Colosseum, an aqueduct in Rome, and the trophies of Mario from the Capitoline Hill.

Location: New York, New York (The Frick Collection)
Christ is shown preaching to the multitude while surrounded by the Twelve Apostles, a scene based upon the Chapter 5 of the Gospel of Matthew. This painting was created for Francois Bosquet, Bishop of Montpellier. It was later damaged in a fire that destroyed its companion picture, Queen Esther Approaching the Palace of Ahasuerus. This painting is exceptional among Claude's works due to its large size and large, focused central mass.

This painting is also known as Landscape with psyche Outside the Palace of Cupid. It was created for Prince Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna Naples. One notable feature of this piece is the cool color palette used. This is indicative of Claude's late style, in which he reduced his color palette to mostly cool colors. The painting was an inspiration to John Keats famous work "Ode to a Nightingale."
